There’s nothing like…
the melodious chorus of a pack of wolves at 7:00 AM in the mountains.

“You hear that?” I asked Kevin.
“Wolves,” he answered.
“They sound close.”
“They are.”
“I already prayed before we came up here, so we’re fine… but… what’s the protocol for facing a pack of wolves?” I wondered.
“Go inside,” my husband surmised.

Our laughter, at this point, lets you know that we don’t feel the least bit in danger. We’re calm and panic-free, tucked away in our cozy, toasty cabin (thanks to a lovely Christian ministry that provides complimentary pastoral retreats in CA).

I had planned on going for a morning walk to Inspiration Point overlooking Lake Gregory, but decided it was best to let Wolfgang and his Crew finish out their sunrise praise party. No need to compete. This ain’t The Voice.

Healthy Respect for God’s Creatures

You see, I have a healthy respect for all God’s creatures, especially those that aren’t regulars at Hollywood’s D Pet Hotel or Pimp My Pooch.

This morning’s wolf gang certainly qualifies on that list. As well as the bear I ran into in the Poconos many moons ago who looked nothing like Yogi the Bear, Winnie the Pooh or Jungle Book’s Baloo!

Smokey Bear

He probably looked more like Smokey, now that I think of it, though I didn’t get a good look at his face. I was on a retreat, similar to this, but before marriage. On my way back from quiet time at the lake, I hear, “BANG!”

I look to my right, about 20 feet away, and see the biggest bear’s behind ever. Smokey’s head is completely in the huge camp trash can. Thank God he can’t see me.

“You’re not supposed to run from bears,” I tell myself as my legs Usain Bolt towards my cabin.
“Cover me!” I pray to God as I blaze my own trail.

I never look back to check on Smokey.
I get to my cabin and decide it’s time for me and the Poconos to call it a day.
Healthy respect, Fam.
Healthy respect.

What about David?

I know some of you holy ones are wondering why I didn’t stand and declare David’s confession from 1 Samuel 17:37, “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me… ”

Well, all I can say is that God provided me a way of escape, and I took it. I didn’t have to pull a David and rescue the sheep this time, seize the bear by its hair and strike it and kill it. Smokey was fascinated with the trash. I was only briefly acquainted with his hind parts.

Be Discerning

I don’t want to discourage you from mountain retreats, Fam. They are quite lovely. Being this close to God’s creation puts things in wonderful perspective. If He created all this, He certainly can work out whatever we’ve got going on in the Hills and whatever you’ve got going on your side of the world.

But when you make your reservation at your cozy cabin in the Poconos or Lake Gregory, be discerning. Know when to dance with wolves and when to run from Smokey.

Just saying,
Naima

On Retreat! We All Need Them…

“Over the river
and through the woods
to Grandmother’s house we go!”

Well, we’re not at Grandma’s house, but we are on retreat – over the river and through the woods – in the mountains of California.

It was 39 degrees earlier. Brisk. Beautiful.
Pine trees that smell like Christmas.
Overlooking a crisp, pristine lake.
God’s creation is astounding.

There’s a Song For That!

Can’t you hear King David singing his Psalm 65:8-9?

The whole earth is filled with awe at Your wonders;
where morning dawns, where evening fades,
You call forth songs of joy.
You care for the land and water it;
You enrich it abundantly.
The streams of God are filled with water…

We All Need Retreats

We all need to periodically retreat.

Even Jesus took time to reboot.
For example, in Luke 4, Jesus preaches, heals the sick and casts out the demonic, then verse 42 says, “At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place.” He retreats.

That’s what Kevin and I are doing for a couple of days to rest and hear from the Lord. A friend told us about this complimentary, 2-day pastoral retreat in the mountains. There’s no TV or radio. I’m powering this blog connection by using my cell as a hotspot. It’s just us, God and His creation, a lot of relaxing, music and laughter. Boy, we needed this.

What about you?

Can you plan a retreat?
Can you take time to get away, va-cay or stay-cay?
Let’s make that happen.

Lots of love from the hills… literally,
Naima

Summer Box Office Off With Bang!

DAILY DOSE OF HOPE – BLOG – NAIMA LETT
Summer Box Office Off With Bang!
© NaimaLett.com/blog

2013summerboxoffice

© Man of Steel, Iron Man 3, Star Trek into Darkness, The Wolverine, After Earth & M.U.

The summer box office is off with a bang!

Hollywood is celebrating today because Marvel’s Iron Man 3 had the 2nd largest box office opener in history – hauling in $175.3 million in the U.S. and $680.1 million worldwide. The biggest box office opener to date is last year’s The Avengers at $207.5 million, which included Iron Man, and went on to become the worldwide 3rd highest grossing film of all time ($1.5 billion) after Avatar ($2.7 billion) and Titanic ($2.1 billion).

This 3rd installment of the Iron Man franchise stars Academy Award nominee Robert Downey Jr. and Academy Award winner Sir Ben Kingsley, whom I got to take a master class from at Oxford in England.

Summer Blockbusters

Iron Man 3 is just the beginning of the summer tent poles.
Star Trek into Darkness with Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana opens May 17.
After Earth with Will Smith and son Jaden Smith opens May 31.
Man of Steel, the Superman reboot, opens June 14.
Monsters University, by Disney & Pixar, opens June 21.
The Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman, opens July 26.

In between these expected blockbusters are sequels like Fast & Furious 6, Hangover Part III, Grown Ups 2, Despicable Me 2, Smurfs 2, another 300, and another Percy Jackson. There’s also The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maquire, The Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp, World War Z with Brad Pitt, The Internship with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson , and White House Down with Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx.

What’s Missing?

There’s not a whole lot of great films for the young kiddos this summer. Besides Monsters University, there’s Epic, which I’m not sure about since it hasn’t been rated and then there’s Disney’s Planes… also not yet rated, though it looks like Planes takes after Pixar’s Cars. I didn’t see the first Despicable film, mainly cause I didn’t really dig the name. But, did you like it?

Also missing this summer is the blockbuster chick flick i.e. 2011’s The Help and 2012’s The Hunger Games. We’ll have to wait until November for The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, as it’ll try to make a run for an Oscar. I suppose the adult comedy The Heat with Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock and Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy from the director of Bridesmaids would be considered a chick flick; but will it have the universality of the others? Probably not.

Blockbuster Secret

I went to a media conference here in the LaLa on Saturday and one of the speakers was Will Smith’s script doctor Stanley D. Williams, Ph.D., the author of The Moral Premise.

He stated that “unless a film has a moral premise, it will not be a blockbuster”. In other words, all blockbuster films have some sort of moral premise. Avatar, The Titanic, The Avengers, and Iron Man 3 all broke records because at their core, they still have a moral premise.

Williams says, “The basic form of the moral premise is simple: Vice leads to defeat; but virtue leads to success.” In other words, evil has a bad end. Good has a good end. The psalmist King David sang it like this, “Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it…” Psalm 34:14. We can pretty much bet that every blockbuster film (blockbuster = $100 million+) this summer is going to have a hero whose virtues lead him/her to success and a villain whose vice leads him/her to defeat.

What Will You See?

So, which blockbusters are you looking forward to?
Have you seen Iron Man 3?
Will you check out Man of Steel?
Let me know your thoughts!

Onward & upward, Fam!

Greater Things For Our City

DAILY DOSE OF HOPE – BLOG – NAIMA LETT
Greater Things To Come, For Our City
© NaimaLett.com/blog

© Chris Tomlin, “God of This City”

Los Angeles natives love the LaLa. Ask my neighbors.
And Houston natives love Houston. Ask my husband.
But can’t we say this about most cities?

Where are you from?
New York City? Chi-Town? Hot-Lanta? The Big D? Philly? Motor City? B’Ham? Miami?
Aren’t we proud of our cities?

And we hold a special place for our cities of origin. They form part of our identity. There’s a lot that you instantly know about me when you find out I’m from Augusta, Georgia. And vice versa when you tell me you’re from Boise, Idaho or Newark, New Jersey. Right?!

Big Surprise

But what has surprised me is how fast I’ve fallen for the LaLa in the last 4 years, and specifically the Hills where God has hilariously planted my husband and me. These hills, where we currently live and serve, were nowhere on our radars growing up. But through a series of seemingly impossible circumstances, we wound up here, kind of looking at each other like, “Now, what?”

Now, what?

Once we discovered this odd planting was not some fluke, and God actually arranged all of this because He loved the folks here and wanted us to serve here, we embarked upon learning all that we could about this little city on a hill that refuses to be hidden. And thank the Lord for family and friends who have loved and supported us along the way. It’s been real. LOL!

Easy Ain’t

One would think that because God routed us here, daily life would be a breeze. But we keep learning that just because God calls us to a place doesn’t mean it’s easy. Easy this ain’t.

Is it fulfilling? YES!
Is it our purpose? YES!
Is it easy? NO!

Greater Things

But God encouraged me yesterday at a National Day of Prayer event where we prayed for Hollywood, Los Angeles and our nation. I also lifted up our latest Adventure in LaLa Land. At the end of the evening, the worship leader started playing the Chris Tomlin version of “God of This City” (video above). The chorus says:

For greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this City

I was reminded of Jesus’ words to His disciples in John 14:12-14, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

Isn’t that encouraging? We have the ability to do greater things for others because God sent His Spirit to dwell within us when Jesus returned to the Father.

God isn’t finished with this city. He’s not finished with us in this city.
God isn’t finished with your city. What are the greater things He has for your city?

Things may not always be easy, but what greater thing ever is?

Onward & upward, Fam!

National Day of Prayer

DAILY DOSE OF HOPE – BLOG – NAIMA LETT
Today is National Day of Prayer
© NaimaLett.com/blog

Natl-Day-of-Prayer

Since 1952, our nation has observed the National Day of Prayer…
a day designated by Congress for our nation “to turn to God in prayer and meditation”.

This year’s theme is “Investing in Hope… Transforming our Nation Through Prayer!”
Invest in Hope.
Transform through Prayer.
Sounds good to me.

Shout out to Mike & Karen Davis and the Centre for Christian Training and Development for kicking off a prayer call at 5 AM this morning. There are prayer events like this all over the nation today. Are you participating?

If My People

The passage that is most used in the National Day of Prayer announcements and events is 2 Chronicles 7:14, “…If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

What is rarely discussed is the context by which God speaks these words. 2 Chronicles 7 records some pretty miraculous things. King Solomon prays a voluminous prayer of dedication in building a temple for God in Chapter 6. Then, fire comes from heaven and consumes their sacrifices. God’s glory fills the temple. All the people fall down on their faces in worship. This kicks off festivals that last for weeks. It’s an all out party.

When it’s all said and done, God appears to Solomon at night and tells him that He’s heard Solomon’s prayer and chosen this temple for His name. Then God says, when judgment comes on the land i.e. drought, locusts and plagues, if God’s people turn back to Him, He will forgive their sins and heal their land.

Might We Have Things Twisted?

It sounds like the judgment comes because God’s people turn away from Him, doesn’t it? And it sounds like God’s healing comes when God’s people turn back to Him. Anybody else read it like that?

Might we have things a little twisted?

For our family of faith who keep looking at “sinners” and/or Hollywood and/or any particular group and saying how messed up our country is and how God is judging us because of sinners’ godlessness, might we be off? It sounds like God is saying judgment occurs when His people forsake Him.

God tells Solomon as long as he follows God, his throne will be established. But God says once Solomon decides to serve and worship other gods, the people will be run out of the land. What did Solomon do? Served and worshiped other gods. What happened? God’s people were booted from their land. It’s all conditional.

How Bout We Turn

How about we, God’s people, turn from our godless ways? How about we repent? I’m not saying sinners don’t need to repent. I’m just saying if we’re going to quote 2 Chronicles 7:14, we might want to look at the man and woman in the mirror. It sounds like God is waiting on us. So, let’s do it, Fam.

Father, forgive us. We, your people, have sinned against You. We have served other gods and the works of our own hands. Please forgive us. We turn our hearts back to You and seek Your face and pray that You will hear us, forgive us and heal our land, in Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Fellas, Don’t Buy Us Roses?

DAILY DOSE OF HOPE – BLOG – NAIMA LETT
Fellas, Don’t Buy Us Roses?
© NaimaLett.com/blog

Skip to 02:50 for song, © Tamia

Yesterday…
on the way to our 1st Hope in the Hills Community Group hosted by Bobby & Teka Perry, my husband Kevin and I turned on the radio and heard the soulful sounds of 6-time Grammy-nominated R&B/gospel singer Tamia (pictured above), who is the wife of basketball superstar Grant Hill. These are the lyrics that we heard:

Don’t Buy Me Roses

So don’t bring me roses, bring me the truth
Don’t buy me diamonds ’cause that just won’t do
Material things I could buy myself if I really want to
I need something special, I need something new
Just give me you…

Don’t Listen to Her

I kindly turned to the love of my life, my husband of almost 12 years, who I have known since I was an 18-year old freshman at Howard University and said, “Don’t listen to her.”

Then we both burst out laughing.

Here’s Why

My love language is giving/receiving gifts.

When Kevin proposed to me, he planned a marathon day of beautiful gifts that included a dozen fuchsia roses. They were absolutely breathtaking. I carried those roses cross-country on the plane and kept them alive for another week, doting on how much this man loved me.

Then, when we were engaged, Kevin braved ice and snow and found exquisite lilac roses for my birthday. When he brought them to my office, I melted. That ministered love to me on such a deep and visceral level that if we had not made a promise to one another to wait to have sex until after we were married, it would’ve been on.

It’s the Thought

I am not a materialistic person. I’m not that chic that has to have a whole bunch of stuff to be happy in this world. We’ve had much. We’ve had nothing. I’ve learned contentment. Anyone who knows me well knows that I give 200 times more than my expectation of return.

That being said, what communicates love to me most is when someone takes the time to know me well enough to gift something meaningful to me. It doesn’t have to cost a dime. Money is not the issue. It’s the thought behind it. That’s how I treat others. You know?

Love Language

With over 35-years of marriage counseling and pastoral experience and 45 years of marriage, Dr. Gary Chapman wrote a series on Five Love Languages. The premise is that couples who choose to communicate love in the way that their partner best receives it tend to have healthier relationships.

Jesus put it like this, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13. In other words, true love requires sacrifice for one another. I choose to speak Kevin’s language to him. He chooses to speak my language to me. Get it?

Chapman says the five most prominent languages through which we receive love are by words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch.

When we first got married, I kept gifting Kevin and becoming disappointed because it didn’t mean as much to him as it did to me. Then we realized gifts was not his language. I had to learn to speak in his language in order for him to understand how much I loved him.

Don’t Buy Us Roses?

There is no one-size-fits-all approach here.

Love Tamia, but don’t listen to her and stop buying roses if that’s how your lady receives your love. You aren’t married to Tamia. Grant Hill is. And Tamia has just told the entire world that what she needs most from Grant is quality time. So, let Grant and Tamia have all the quality time in the world. On the other hand, let us find out what languages our loved ones speak and become fluent in those! Just saying!

What’s your love language?
Discover it here: http://www.5lovelanguages.com/.

Becoming bilingual in LaLa Land,

Middle of a Miracle

DAILY DOSE OF HOPE – BLOG – NAIMA LETT
Middle of a Miracle
© NaimaLett.com/blog

Walking on Water © isac goulart

We’re in the middle of a miracle…
with no knowledge of the actual outcome, except we’ll be fine.
Ain’t that exciting?!

Surprise!

7 days ago, while out of town, we received an email that our worship rental space may need to shift on May 1st. That’s tomorrow. 30 days notice, as per lease terms, would’ve been nice. 60 days even better. But hey, things sounded dire. What’cha gonna do?

We fasted.
We prayed.
We reached out.
We reached in.

We’re standing in faith and moving as quickly as possible through our new adventure in LaLa Land as we determine our options and make prompt decisions.

No Time

What’s amazing is that I’m at peace. Really.

Perhaps that brief bout a few years ago with homelessness, at no fault of our own, prepared us to navigate our family of faith through this journey.

Or maybe the longer I live the more I realize that anxiety adds nothing but sleepless nights, body pains and premature hair changes! No thanks.

Or possibly it was the conversation I had with my husband when everything started going down. In my best melodramatic-emotional-artist form, I expressed my desire to fall apart.

“There’s no time for that,” Kevin responded. Ain’t that the truth?! LOL!

Time to Walk on Water

This is that time to stretch out on faith and accept the Lord’s invitation to walk on water.

Matthew 14:22-36, in the middle of winds and waves, Jesus walks the lake to His disciples, who are terrified. But Peter says, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” Jesus said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Some folks dog Peter for losing faith and sinking, but I say that joker was bold enough to take the risk, step out the boat and walk on water!!! And he had enough sense to call on the Lord when he started sinking. I’m just saying! I love this story.

Bona fide Miracle

There’s no walking on water if we don’t step out the boat in the wind and waves.
The miracle happens when we choose to “Come!” on the journey.

So, let’s come, Fam!
Or let’s go! However you want to phrase it.
No need to look at the wind and waves.
We’ve got a standing invitation to experience the miraculous with our Lord.

Are you in the middle of a miracle?
Excuse me while I grab my wetsuit,

Welcome Back to the LaLa

DAILY DOSE OF HOPE – BLOG – NAIMA LETT
Welcome Back to the LaLa
© NaimaLett.com/blog

LA

Welcome back to the LaLa!

Sunshine.
Palm trees.
80 degrees with a breeze.
Gotta love it.

From the looks of it, life could appear quite perfect.
Manicured lawns.
Bird of paradise flowers.
Miniature poodles exiting Pimp My Pooch.

We enjoy days like this.
Because every LaLa resident knows that the exterior doesn’t always match the interior.

Mismatch

The championship purple and gold of the Lakers dims with a dismal season ending and determining whether to resign Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol.

The City, known for some of the wealthiest landowners in the world, has a hard time balancing its budget and continues to cut teachers, education programs, etc.
And the once-musical-dynasty Jackson family is back in court fighting over Michael’s death.

That fabulous car we see could be a person’s house for the month, and the trunk is the closet.
That picture-perfect family photo could have been staged for the paparazzi.
And that multi-million dollar palatial house on the hill could meet an earth tremor or mudslide that decides it would be better off leveled in three seconds.

Things are not always as they seem, but that’s why we learn to be sensitive to people’s situations and ask lots of questions and listen in between the pauses. :=)

Good to Be Back

Either way, it’s good to be back in the LaLa.

I had a marathon 2 months of travel and ministry and reconnect ions that I look forward to unpacking. I’m quite exhausted. My apologies for the late post today. :=)

How are you?
Does your exterior match your interior?
Are you at peace, not just as a front on the outside, but also on the inside?

It’s imperative that our outsides and insides reflect the same truth.

Remember Matthew 23? Jesus suggests that the religious leaders would do well to match their inside life and outside life. He gets a little gangster with it though. Verse 27-28: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”

Yeah, He went there. But it was to encourage us to match on the inside and outside. If we’ve been changed on the inside, it should bleed over onto the outside.

Whatever our Circumstances

Whatever our circumstances today, we don’t have to front. We can be real and authentic and walk in peace. It’s all good.

The LaLa may always be a little smoke and mirrors, but we don’t have to be thrown by that. We can choose to walk in truth, enjoy the sunshine and pat little Bella or Sadie who prances out of the doggie salon after getting her tresses trimmed.

I’m just saying,
Naima

Launch!

What fun! I’m at the National Conference for Christian Women in Media in Dallas, Texas.

Tomorrow, I’ll teach the media seminar: LAUNCH! Move Your TV/FILM Idea from Concept to Production with my friend, actress/author Lar Park Lincoln. Should be loads of fun.

We are teaching professionals who have brilliant ideas for TV, film and online content the next steps in taking their concept from dream to reality. This is the same process we are doing with Confessions of a Hollywood Christian and taking it from book form television series.

More Than TV/FILM

The process is not only applicable with TV & Film, but with your ideas across the board. For example, (TOP SECRET!), I’ll share with you one of my three main points.

To move your idea from concept to production, you must start at the end and work backwards. You must have a clearly defined goal and KNOW what your vision is for that final product. Now, there may be minor changes along the way, but it is imperative to know where you’re headed before you start the journey. And that takes planning and work.

In Luke 14:28-30, Jesus tells His disciples to start with the end in mind when following Him and count the costs before beginning: “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and calculate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’

Whatever Your Idea

Whatever is on your heart to LAUNCH this year, get that puppy out. Do the work upfront to figure out where you’re going. Draw your map, then have fun connecting the dots.

Have a fabulous weekend.
I plan to!
