Nothing is Impossible

©Israel Houghton, Nothing is Impossible

Nothing is impossible.

Perhaps you need to hear that today. I read it this morning:
“For nothing will be impossible with God.” Luke 1:37

It’s what the angel Gabriel told Mary when she asked how she was going to give birth to God’s Son when she was a virgin. Seems pretty impossible, right?

Not only did Gabriel break down how Mary would be overshadowed by the Holy Spirit for this immaculate conception, but He also informed her that her cousin Elizabeth who was barren had also conceived a child in her old age. Yep, that’s pretty impossible too.

What do you have going on, Fam?
Does it seem impossible?
More impossible than being impregnated by the Holy Spirit and giving birth to the Son of God? More impossible than conceiving a child after you’re passed childbearing age?

The same miracle-working God who created life in those two impossible-looking wombs is our heavenly Father today. Same God.

What are you facing?
Does it seem impossible?
More impossible than a 1st-time feature filmmaker casting two 1st-time actors as leading roles working alongside not-yet-professional cast & crew to create a moving film called Beasts of the Southern Wild which could be this year’s Academy Awards ‘little engine that could’ film.
See yesterday’s blog: Oscar’s Little Engine that Could.

I don’t know if the filmmakers believe in God, but I know that same miracle-working God who’s allowing them to be phenomenally blessed is our heavenly Father. Same God.

Another translation of that verse above is “For no word from God will ever fail.” How powerful is that, Fam? No word that God has spoken will ever fail. What has He spoken in His written Word to us? What has He spoken through His preached Word? What has He spoken over our lives? Remember His Word today. It will NEVER fail.

Be encouraged, Fam.
Nothing is impossible with God.
Nothing!
Naima

PS. This video is Israel’s Houghton singing at Lakewood last year, “Nothing is Impossible”. It’s the first few minutes of the video. He goes into an extended worship session after that. Enjoy!

Does this encourage you today?

This Year’s Oscar ‘Little Engine that Could’

DAILY DOSE OF HOPE – BLOG – NAIMA LETT
This Year’s Oscar ‘Little Engine that Could’
© NaimaLett.com/blog

© Fox Searchlight, Quvenzhané Wallis in Beasts of the Southern Wild

I know it seems early for Oscar predictions…
but this is traditionally the time of year that Oscar Buzz begins in LaLa Land.

The last of the BIG 3 film festivals that normally premieres Oscar Award-winning films just closed this week. That’s Toronto. The other 2 are Sundance (January) and Cannes (May). When Toronto wraps, the Oscar race runs.

Oscar campaigns start rolling out. Be clear: no film or actor wins an Oscar without a well- planned and executed advertising campaign to those 5,765 Academy voters described by the LA Times article “Unmasked the Academy” as 94% Caucasian, 77% male, median age 62.

People ask me all the time why Denzel Washington won an Academy Award for going rogue in Training Day instead of his role as Malcolm X OR why Halle Berry won for Monster’s Ball when she finally bared all in an explicit scene. My answer is usually a question: “Do you know who’s voting?” :=)

OSCAR’S LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD

Every year, there’s an Oscar “Little Engine that Could” film. Last year, it was The Artist. Year before, The King’s Speech. Before that, Slumdog Millionaire. These are independent films that are so non-traditional and made with such ‘nothing’ budgets in comparison to Hollywood’s tent poles that they become Rocky-like underdogs. And Hollywood loves an underdog.

I saw a film last weekend that potentially could be that underdog: Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Fox Searchlight describes its Rocky-esque contender with the following: “Benh Zeitlin’s BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD whisks you to a surreal realm, where little girls and mythical animals coexist in a bayou called The Bathtub, all intertwined in the cosmic mesh of the universe. Hushpuppy (stunning newcomer Quvenzhané Wallis) relentlessly explores her world for answers, to satisfy her curiosity, and to make her budding mark on a world she’s only beginning to comprehend.”

Quvenzhané Wallis (pictured above) portrays Hushpuppy. When she auditioned, she was only 5 years old and could barely read. She had never acted before, yet she landed the role over 4,000 little actresses who auditioned. She filmed the movie when she was 6. She just turned 9, and the Hollywood Reporter revealed yesterday that she’s being honored with the first major trophy of the Oscar season on October 22nd at the Beverly Hilton: Hollywood Film Award’s New Hollywood Award. In the past, this award honoring best new talent has gone to Robert Pattinson (Twilight), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious), and Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games).

But Quvenzhané isn’t the only first-time actor. The other star of the film, Dwight Henry (who portrays her onscreen father Wink), also had never acted before this film. He’s the Hurricane Katrina survivor who owned the bakery across from Beast’s casting office in Louisiana. He even turned down the role of Wink several times before the writer/director’s persistence persuaded him to do it. He’s now filming a new movie with Brad Pitt.

That writer/director who wouldn’t take “NO” for an answer is Ben Zeitlin, and this is his very first full-length feature film, or that’s the story that is being released. You heard me – #1. Ben didn’t have lots of money where he could hire lots of professional crew. He used friends and family. He says, “I want to fill my life and my films with wild, brave, goodhearted people, and whatever amount of chaos and disaster that leads too, it doesn’t matter because you’re going through it with the people you love and in the end, no matter what, the movies come out wild, brave and good hearted.”

Fam, do you get this?
1st time writer/director.
1st time filmmakers/crew.
1st time lead actor and actress.
And its a fantasy story well told with a message of courage and heart.
Little engine that could.

Disclaimer:
Now, the language is rough for children, even though the film stars a 6-year old, and there’s some violence and adult situations.

And the underlying message is more naturalistic than monotheistic. In other words, Hushpuppy learns that all of nature is connected as one – humans, animals, water, fire, etc. That’s more naturalism. Biblically-speaking, I can’t back that up. While I appreciate nature as God’s creation, I believe that I am not one with nature.

Genesis 1 – 3 clearly describes how God created nature, then He created man in His image and instructed man to subdue nature. As a result of sin and the curse, man will “return to the ground because from it you were taken; For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” 3:19

Death and our current earthly bodies returning to dust comes as a direct result of sin. But each one of us lives eternally. There is life beyond earthly death. We can choose to spend that eternity in paradise with God when we accept His Son Jesus as Lord, or choose to spend that eternity disconnected from God in a world of perpetual pain and suffering. Our choice. But either way, while we’re on this earth, we are made in God’s image redeeming a fallen world. We are not made as one with His trees or oceans or chickens. Does that make sense?

The film doesn’t explicitly address this theological discussion, but I noticed a recurring theme of Hushpuppy’s oneness with her surroundings; so I feel responsible to create dialogue about those elements that agree and disagree with our Christian worldview.

Anyway, if you get a chance, go get lost in this fantasy drama. Be warned. It’s a tear-jerker. You’ll cheer for the underdogs during the film and cheer when they are each nominated for Academy Awards. It’ll be a really LONG shot for them to actually win Best Picture. After all, they’ll be up against Dark Knight Rises, Les Miserables and Lincoln.

But I’ll be cheering little Quvenzhané, who at 6 years old, held her own on that big screen. I’ll cheer as she walks the red carpet and pray that more doors open for her to hone her craft and carve out a career where she can take on roles that bring forth truth and hope in our world.

What’s your “little engine that could”?
Go on! Be a 1st time underdog and make us proud,
Naima

Duet with God – VIDEO

Duet with God

© NaimaLett.com

I recently sang a duet with God.

In a valley moment, I started praying and a new song soared from my soul towards heaven.
Then, I got a response. Drama!

Above is a brief excerpt from my sermon, “Don’t Give Up!” at Hope in the Hills. I pray it’ll encourage you today that God knows exactly what we’re going through, and we don’t have to give up.

Be reminded of Zephaniah 3:17, which describes a time of restoration for God’s people when God sings over them: “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.

Have you heard God’s song?
When He sings, it’s worth listening… cause
What He sings can literally change our lives,

Be encouraged, Fam.

9/11 & NBC’s GO ON

DAILY DOSE OF HOPE – BLOG – NAIMA LETT
9/11 & NBC’s GO ON
© NaimaLett.com/blog

©NBC’s GO ON

I laughed out loud, last night.

It’s been awhile since I’ve done that watching a TV show. Sit-coms have taken a hit recently and many that I’ve tried to watch have not been very funny. If mildly entertaining, they’ll usually get a chuckle here or a smile there from me. But last night, while watching the pilot of NBC’s new comedy, GO ON, I found myself really laughing, out loud, more than once.

NBC says, “GO ON is a touching new comedy created by Emmy Award-winning writer/executive producer Scott Silveri (Friends) starring Matthew Perry (Friends) as Ryan King, a recent widower and sports talk radio host ready to get back to work after the loss of his wife. When Ryan’s boss makes him attend grief counseling before returning to the air, Ryan finds himself in a support group for “life change,” where he meets an oddball cast of characters, all with their own back stories filled with varying degrees of loss.”

If you’ve never lost anything, you might not get the show.
But if, like my husband and me, you lose stuff all the time, this show resonates.

If, like us, you’ve lost loved ones, health, jobs, careers, homes, church homes, cars, relationships, hopes, dreams… you’ll be able to relate.

And if, like me, you’ve actually been through group grief counseling, you’ll be rolling. The support group scenes in the show were the funniest to me.

Many of you know that I lost my mom to cancer when I was a sophomore in college. During my junior year, I became an exchange student from Howard University to the University of Southern California. My grief migrated west with me and decided it was time to put on a show. I needed help, Fam. So, while at USC, I met with a grief group once a week. We were a rag-tag group of students trying to make sense out of our bizarre symptoms of loss, but we helped each other get through it and learned healthy ways to cope.

I’m so grateful that so many years later, I can actually laugh at some of that which caused me such pain. In no way am I laughing at the loss of my mom. I won’t ever do that. But I found out last night that I can laugh at the process that helped me heal, and that in some way, helps me continue to heal.

Today is September 11th.

source

Even 11 years later, there are still lots of people feeling the pain of loss. We will never laugh at terrorism, tragedy and the loss of innocent lives. But I do hope that shows like GO ON will help us heal a little more. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the show premieres tonight. Last night was just a preview.

My 9/11 prayer for each of you is Isaiah 61. Isaiah is talking about a time of restoration for God’s people, but Jesus quotes this same scripture when He steps on the scene to start his public ministry. Today, I pray that He will:

“…comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve…
to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
the oil of joy instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.”

God sees all and knows all and is able to heal. I’m a living testimony of that. Grief doesn’t last always. At some point, we trade in the mourning for joy. That’s what I felt last night.

Whether you watch the show or not, or whether you like it or not, doesn’t matter. It could tank after this. Or the future episodes may not be as funny as the original pilot (which better be funny if a network is going to buy the show and order at least 13 episodes). Either way, I wish you a beautiful 9/11 memorial and I wish you peace, joy and healing.

Go on, Fam,
Naima

How’s your 9/11?

Happy Monday

DAILY DOSE OF HOPE – BLOG – NAIMA LETT
HAPPY MONDAY!
© NaimaLett.com/blog

Happy Monday, Fam!

Mondays are our day of rest; but I’m usually still up very early. Most times, I knock out the writing, then retreat the rest of the day.

This morning, however, I had an interview to finish for a mag article coming out in November. It’s a good one, Fam. 800,000 readers. They wanted to know about Hollywood Christian and what we’re doing out here in LaLa Land. What a blessing! I’ll let you know when it’s avail!

Then, we had to get our sink fixed, though Kevin handled most of that drama.

You see the picture above?
That’s what happened to me yesterday when I turned on the faucet to wash dishes. Water went everywhere – on me, over the counters, on the floor, under the sink. Everywhere! By the time I got it off, I was wishing I had on my bathing suit. LOL!

Who needs an outside sprinkler when you can slide across your own kitchen floor?
The element of surprise mixed with just the right amount of dazzle and flood factor… Now we’re talking!

OK, so I’m making light of the situation, but isn’t this exactly how we can choose to approach our Mondays, or any other day of the week? Faucet hoses wear out. Pipes burst. Earthquakes shake. Stuff is going to happen. We have no control over that. But how do we respond? That’s what we can manage.

If you’re having the type of day where your faucet has turned into a sprinkler, you can:
1) Go get a bathing suit and mop, put on some music and dance the water out the door, OR
2) Mope, pout and curse, and then go get the mop… cause the water still has to be cleaned up.

Proverbs 17:22 says “A joyful heart is good medicine, But a broken spirit dries up the bones.”

Choose joy today, Fam.

And if you can’t run through some sprinklers with someone you love, spray yourself or your fam from the kitchen sink.

DISCLAIMER: Though, if you’re married to a sister, make sure she hasn’t just gotten her hair “did”. That could prove problematic. Just saying.

Happy Happy,
Naima

Is your day looking up?

#MovingForward – Video/Dance

© GAC Worship Conference Dancers led by Dr. Kathleen S. Turner w/ Linny Smith and Cathedral Mass Choir, “Moving Forward” by Israel Houghton

Some times, I want to call these “Feel Good Fridays” and just spread the joy!

So, here we go.

The political conventions concluded, and no matter which side of the fence we grow our grass, I hope we’re praying for all parties involved, as instructed by 1 Timothy 2:1-8: “I urge… that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”

The convention’s theme this week, “Forward”, reminded me of a blog I posted several months ago called, #MovingForward, highlighting worship leader-songwriter Israel Houghton’s 2009 megahit “Moving Forward”.

Guess what I found this morning?
A video of my wonderful friends at Greater Allen Cathedral ministering through dance to that very song, Moving Forward (VIDEO).

When I saw my beautiful friend, Dr. Kathleen S. Turner, (who choreographed the piece awhile ago) spontaneously leading all those dancers forward, it brought a huge grin to my face. There’s just no way to stay seated.

Dr. Kat, as we love to call her, founded the Allen Liturgical Dance Ministry in 1978 and directed it for 30 years, partnering first with Rev. Lucile Hill, then my sister-friend Rev. Eyesha Marable. The ministry grew to over 200 members with children to seasoned saints, men and women.

Dr. Kat received her Master of Divinity and Master of Sacred Theology from Yale Divinity School and recently finished her PhD at Fordham University. She will be teaching and publishing in the field of religious education and sharing “how both liturgical dance and the arts are teaching vehicles for the church as a community place of learning”. So proud of her! On the video, she’s the one in the front in red/black.

I share this video with you today, hoping it will lift your spirit and remind you to keep moving forward with God.

What are you doing this month? This year?
#MoveForward, Fam!

Lyrics:
Not going back
Moving ahead
Here to declare to You
The past is over in You
All things are made new
Surrender my life to Christ
I’m moving, moving forward

“Truth is a Hit”, says Berry Gordy

DAILY DOSE OF HOPE – BLOG – NAIMA LETT
“Truth is a Hit” says Berry Gordy
© NaimaLett.com/blog

©Motown

“The truth is a hit,” says Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records.

“You don’t have to fictionalize it. You don’t have to do anything with it. You just have to make it entertaining. That’s what we did at Motown.”

What a secret to success!

Hopefully, we’ll get to see some of that truth in Motown: The Musical, which is being produced for Broadway 2013, and currently casting and looking for a young Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. If you know any phenomenally talented 8-11 year olds, get those YouTube submissions going. :=)

How Much Truth?

Honestly, I’m not sure how much truth Gordy wants to share about his own life. It’s been reported that the self-described driven hustler has usually tried to silence (even legally threaten) projects like the original Dreamgirls and original Sparkle that portrayed the character based on him as the cutthroat businessman people seem to think that he is.

Motown, no doubt, was a huge success, and became the soundtracks to people’s lives during the 60s, 70s and 80s, because of Gordy’s business acumen. Started in 1959 with an $800 loan Berry secured from family members, Motown made history as “the most successful African-American owned and operated record company and business in the U.S.”, with over 450 employees and grossing over $20 million by 1966. (That’s within 7 years, Entrepreneur Fam.)

Motown crossed over to pop charts and proved to be “The Sound of Young America”. In 1966, the company’s “hit ratio”, the percentage of records released that made the national charts, was 75 percent! Unprecedented!

Motown churned out truth hit after truth hit from artists like Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Martha and the Vandellas, Mary Wells, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Lionel Richie and the Commodores, on and on.

But there were a lot of back alley, side room, under the table deals going on. It’s been said that Gordy did whatever had to be done to be successful. His autobiography has been reportedly used as a guidebook on how to navigate the music industry and build superstars to a whole new generation of managers including Matthew Knowles, Beyonce’s dad. Beyonce reported her dad idolized and studied Gordy’s every move when managing their girl group.

Give the People What They Want

I suspect the Motown musical will end up more “feel good” than “tell all”, especially since Gordy is producer and creator of the show. But either way, it’s always good when folks recognize that truth not only impacts people’s lives, but it’s actually what they want.

So, lets give the people what they want.
People yearn for truth.
It’s liberating.

That’s what Jesus says anyway. “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” John 8:31-32

I love that! The truth makes us free. I wish everyone could live liberated in truth. I’ve been candid since childhood, or so I’m told. Some kids are just born that way. We see truth, say truth, and if we dare lie, it’s like the world is coming to an end until we can go get that lie straight and tell the truth. Folks instinctively feel like they can let their guard down in our presence because we’re be real with them and they can be real with us. It’s a great way to live.

Go head. Try it.
Truth’s a hit,
Naima

What do you think? Has truth been a hit in your life?

Dreams Can Come True

DAILY DOSE OF HOPE – BLOG – NAIMA LETT
Dreams Can Come True
© NaimaLett.com/blog

©Photo/AFP, Michael Clarke Duncan

“This is really like a gift from God… in Hollywood, dreams can come true.”

That’s what Academy Award nominee Michael Clarke Duncan, who quietly passed away Monday (age 54) never fully recovering from a heart attack in July, said about his new acting career in the 1999 New York Times article, For a Gentle Giant, A Big First Step.

“All my life, I wanted to come to Hollywood,” he said. “It was something my mother always wanted to do, but nobody pushed her.”

Sounds like she gently pushed him, though, when he needed it the most. After surviving Chicago’s South Side as a child, leaving Alcorn State University to take care of his ailing mom, digging ditches at a gas company for years to support the family, security-guarding on the play tour Beauty Shop 2, and deciding to stay in Los Angeles when the play came to town, Michael called his mom from a roach-infested, cheap Hollywood hotel with $20 left to his name.

Mom’s Advice

Single mom, Jean, gave him the following life-changing advice, “If you have given it your all and it still isn’t working, then you can quit. But if you haven’t given it your all yet, you have to keep trying.”

So, he kept trying, and landed security guard work for Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Jamie Foxx and LL Cool J. After building trust, Michael secured an agent who “helped him land some small roles on some of the television series starring his clients, like The Jamie Foxx Show and Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” usually as a bouncer, security guard, etc., because of his 6’5″, 300 lb stature.

What People Say Can Come True

The television work led to small film roles as a bouncer and security guard, which led to an audition for Bruce Willis’ 1998 blockbuster Armageddon, as Bear, one of the members of Willis’ digging crew. The irony, CNN reports, is that when Michael used to dig ditches at the gas company back in Chicago, his co-workers called him “Hollywood” because he talked so much about his dream of becoming a movie star. They used to tease Michael while he was digging and say, “Hey, man, Bruce Willis wants to talk to you about a movie.’ And they’d just crack up laughing.”

Wow, did that come true!

Armageddon’s director Michael Bay recalled that Duncan cried during his first audition for the film because he “wanted to make his mom proud.” Duncan landed the role and Bay says he earned the most improved actor award because he went from a not-so-great actor to ‘everyone loved him, his infectious spirit and great belly laugh’.

This may surprise many actors, but Michael Bay didn’t hire Michael Clarke Duncan for that blockbuster based on his outstanding acting skills. Bay told Duncan, “Mike, I hired you for you. I want the sweet Mr. Clarke Duncan I met in that (audition) room. The audience is going to fall in love with you.”

Wow, did that come true too!

Dreams Come True

While still filming Armageddon, Bruce Willis read the script The Green Mile based on Stephen King’s bestseller and told Michael about it. Michael recalled, “Bruce told me about the part and said that if I was interested, he would call the director, Frank Darabont, and tell him about me, but that from then on it was up to me. I told him, yes, of course, but I didn’t know if he’d really do it.”

Bruce Willis made the phone call. Michael didn’t land the starring role opposite Tom Hanks based on his resume. Writer-director Frank Darabont remembers, “There was something about him (Michael) that I just couldn’t ignore. After his first reading, he kept haunting me. Given that he was a fairly inexperienced actor at that point, obviously there was a concern about ‘Gee, how would this guy do?’ But once we put him on film, it became apparent that he was up to the task.”

Michael got an acting coach, Larry Moss, to teach him how to dig deep within and access his wealth of emotions for the many emotional scenes in the movie (LA Times). Take after take after take, Michael worked hard. His performance as John Coffey, the falsely accused gentle giant with healing powers who dies for the sins of another, was a dream come true.

It was no accident that John Coffey had the initials J.C. It was impossible to miss that he was the Jesus Christ figure in the story. It was as if Romans 5:6-11 jumped off the pages of the screenplay (excerpt): “Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person… But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us…”

This John Coffey/Christ-figure role earned Michael nominations for the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, MTV Movie Awards, NAACP Image Awards, and he won 2 People’s Choice Awards. The role launched the rest of his career which spanned almost 15 years and about 50 films including The Green Mile, Armageddon, The Whole Nine Yards, Planet of the Apes, The Scorpion King, Daredevil, Sin City, Kung Fu Panda, Brother Bear, and Redemption Road.

Our prayers are with Michael’s family. His story is truly an inspiration to all of us that our careers are a gift from God, that we don’t have to give up, and that dreams can come true.

Keep dreaming, Fam,
Naima

Can you relate to Michael’s story?

Earthquake in the Hills

EARTHQUAKE IN THE HILLS
© NaimaLett.com/blog

©CityTour

3:26 AM
Labor Day morning, I’m jolted from sleep by a crash.

“It couldn’t be…,” I think.

I had explained to a friend just last week how we’d been quake-free since our move to the Hills a couple of years ago. When we lived closer to the ocean, we felt one every 6 months or so; but gone were those days. Or so I thought.

“You heard that?” I ask my husband… as if he could miss it.

“Earthquake,” he calms. “We’re still moving. You feel that?” he asks… as if I could miss it.

“Sounded like a crash from above,” I’m still disoriented.

“No. That was below.”

“Sounded like above.”

“No, that was definitely below. Foundation.”

You know you’ve assimilated to California culture when you’re jerked awake by a quake and you begin to debate the whereabouts of sound.

3:28 AM

I scope my big-number clock, then grope for my phone to google “earthquake los angeles”. Where is my phone? Neither of us turns on a light or moves toward the door frame. If this was a drill, would we have failed? I still don’t want to believe there are quakes in the Hills. So, I continue my denial.

“You sure that wasn’t above us?”

“No, it was below.”

I find my phone. Light pierces the room.

“What are you doing?” Kevin wants to know.

“Looking for news. Found it.”

Earthquake.usgs.gov confirms magnitude 3.2, epicenter 34.068°N, 118.391°W, BHills 03:26:55AM.

“3.2,” I sigh. Thank God it wasn’t worse.

I find a second headline from the LA Times: ‘Earthquake: 3.2 Quake Strikes Near Beverly Hills’.

Well, that settles it. There ARE quakes in the Hills.

And apparently we’re close to a fault called the West Beverly Hills Lineament, the northern part of the Newport-Inglewood Fault System, which is pretty active. Who knew?! Scientists (whom I’m convinced don’t live in the city) are “excited” to discover more about the fault since last year when LA sought to build a subway through the community. It’s been a huge political fight.

Makes no sense to me. Why would anyone want to build an underground subway in LA with as many active faults as we have? That’s like when I see huge houses built hanging off of hills. I think, “Don’t you know we have earthquakes and mudslides?” To each his own, I suppose.

Later that day, I’ll discover that quakes are so unusual in this area that residents started calling the Police Department. Folks are, for lack of a better word, shaken. So, I’m not the only one shocked.

3:32 AM

“Do we need to be concerned about this fan?”
For the first time, I think about something falling on my head. Nobody hangs pictures above headboards in LA, but ceiling fans abound.

“No, it’s bolted into the beam,” Kevin assures.

I scurry through the dark to check our rooms, especially the paintings that had been my mom’s. Nothing’s broken. Nothing’s busted.

“Thank you, Lord,” I whisper and climb back into bed.

I’m reminded of PSALM 46:1-3:
1 Therefore God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

I’m grateful the Lord is our refuge and we don’t have to fear when the earth shakes and hills quake; but honestly, this is way too much excitement for the start of a leisurely vacation day.

3:36 AM

“You sure nothing crashed above us?” I ask one last time.

“No,” my husband turns over to go back to sleep. “It was below.”

“Well, Lord, please keep that fan in the ceiling” I pray, and then I too turn over to go back to bed.

________

Hi Fam,
This really happened to us yesterday. We love LaLa Land, but we’ve had to get use to the phenomenon called earthquakes. Most days are a beautiful 80 degrees with a breeze, hardly no rain, no snow, no ice storms, no hurricanes, no tornadoes. Most days are perfect. And then every now and then, the earth moves and I’m reminded no place is perfect but heaven. :=)

Have you experienced an earthquake before? If you’re in LA, did you feel the one yesterday?

I thought this photo (above) of God’s creation sunbathing would bring a smile to your face.

We recently took it while touring Beverly Hills’ Greystone Mansion where X-Men, The Social Network, Spiderman, The Bodyguard and several other movies have been filmed. They have wonderful gardens and wildlife.

Wishing you a wonderful day outstretched in the sun with your fam too!

Lots of love from LaLa Land,
Naima
