Greater Things To Come, For Our City

Los Angeles natives love the LaLa. Ask my neighbors.
And Houston natives love Houston. Ask my husband.
But can’t we say this about most cities?
Where are you from?
New York City? Chi-Town? Hot-Lanta? The Big D? Philly? Motor City? B’Ham? Miami?
Aren’t we proud of our cities?
And we hold a special place for our cities of origin. They form part of our identity. There’s a lot that you instantly know about me when you find out I’m from Augusta, Georgia. And vice versa when you tell me you’re from Boise, Idaho or Newark, New Jersey. Right?!
Big Surprise
But what has surprised me is how fast I’ve fallen for the LaLa in the last 4 years, and specifically the Hills where God has hilariously planted my husband and me. These hills, where we currently live and serve, were nowhere on our radars growing up. But through a series of seemingly impossible circumstances, we wound up here, kind of looking at each other like, “Now, what?”
Now, what?
Once we discovered this odd planting was not some fluke, and God actually arranged all of this because He loved the folks here and wanted us to serve here, we embarked upon learning all that we could about this little city on a hill that refuses to be hidden. And thank the Lord for family and friends who have loved and supported us along the way. It’s been real. LOL!
Easy Ain’t
One would think that because God routed us here, daily life would be a breeze. But we keep learning that just because God calls us to a place doesn’t mean it’s easy. Easy this ain’t.
Is it fulfilling? YES!
Is it our purpose? YES!
Is it easy? NO!
Greater Things
But God encouraged me yesterday at a National Day of Prayer event where we prayed for Hollywood, Los Angeles and our nation. I also lifted up our latest Adventure in LaLa Land. At the end of the evening, the worship leader started playing the Chris Tomlin version of “God of This City” (video above). The chorus says:
For greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this City
I was reminded of Jesus’ words to His disciples in John 14:12-14, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
Isn’t that encouraging? We have the ability to do greater things for others because God sent His Spirit to dwell within us when Jesus returned to the Father.
God isn’t finished with this city. He’s not finished with us in this city.
God isn’t finished with your city. What are the greater things He has for your city?
Things may not always be easy, but what greater thing ever is?
Onward & upward, Fam!
